For this episode of the podcast series, host Shaun Haney is joined by Bioenterprise CEO Dave Smardon, Global Institute for Food Security and AgWest Bio interim CEO Karen Churchill, and Vive Crop Protection CEO Darren Anderson to unpack where the system is falling short—and what meaningful change could look like.

Smardon says entrepreneurs consistently describe Canadian regulation as difficult to navigate, especially compared to other jurisdictions. Churchill highlights Bill C-359 and greater acceptance of trusted international data as actionable starting points, noting that Canada must modernize without compromising safety. Anderson, whose company regularly launches products in the U.S. years before securing Canadian approval, argues the current culture favours large multinationals and discourages global innovators from entering the Canadian market

The panel explores solutions ranging from regulatory sandboxes to dedicated concierge services, but says that these are only partial fixes. Real progress, they agree, requires political leadership, a shift toward collaboration, and a system designed to move at the pace of innovation.
