In Pittsburgh, like many places, there are competing narratives being told.

On one hand, Pittsburgh is the best place to live in the country, the most affordable place to buy a home in the world.

But, it’s also the worst place in the country to be a Black woman, and a place where people continue to struggle to breathe the air. So which is it? A post-industrial renaissance — or a city leaving some of its citizens behind?

The answer is — yes, and it’s complicated. To truly understand what’s happening and how it’s affecting residents, we have to tell all the stories. The painful stories, the joyful stories, the inconvenient stories.

For 12 years, PublicSource has been telling Pittsburgh stories that build understanding across barriers, and empower residents.

We’re a nonprofit newsroom whose approach is centered in building equity in our community. Through our journalism, we name and explain the problems, elevate community voices, inform leaders who can effect change, showcase solutions, and increase agency for our neighbors.

As a result, legislation is introduced. Policies change. Stigma lessens. Empathy increases.
