How to Create a Meaningful College Club

How to create a meaningful college club was always on my mind during both undergrad and graduate school. I was a part of a finance club in undergrad and a created a small group where I tried to help other students find jobs and network. The problem was the clubs never really added value. We had a few speakers, a trading competition, did a little volunteering, and had some food here and there. But I never found the club to add value to a resume or make me better or smarter at finance (the topic of the club).

Now about 10 years later I run into Ali who runs a club at Queens University. I was shocked when I found out they had a large amount of funding through sponsors which they used to attend conferences and other events. They also had a head of education who was responsible for training and educating students. Who wouldn't want a more senior student to be able to help you with complicated topics?! They also have an interview process to help keep only students who are truly interested and can also add value to the other members. I wish I would have had more of this insight when I was a part of a club in college or when I created my small group in grad school.
