One of the most unique walks of mine - through Kensai cemetery of Almaty. Look at this walk at this angle: many have left Kazakhstan. It is their chance to see, probably, how their ancestors tombstones look nowadays and to honor their families and passed members of the family. The necropolis was founded in the late XIX century.

"Kensai" in Kazakh means "large gorge". The name in Russian sounds like "Wide gap" ("gap" was what the Cossack settlers called gorges). The cemetery is located in the eastern part of Almaty (9 km from the city center) near the Bazarbayev-Ormanov crossing, on top of a mountain from which the entire city can be seen at a glance.

The Kensai cemetery is Muslim. A large number of outstanding government and public figures, representatives of industry, economics, science, medicine, culture, art and other fields of activity are buried here, who have made a significant contribution to the development of the country and society from the XIX century to the present. Many busts, tombstones and monuments are works of art and represent artistic and aesthetic value.

In this video you see a tomb of Abylkhan Kasteyev, the first Kazakh painter and watercolorist, Artist of the Kazakh SSR. The only existing museum of art in Almaty is called after him.
