Seonyudo (仙遊島) is an island located in Okdo-myeon, Gunsan-si, Jeollabuk-do, and serves as the central hub of the Gogunsan Archipelago as well as a popular tourist destination. The name Seonyudo is said to have originated from the island’s breathtaking scenery, which was so beautiful that it was believed to be a place where immortals played. Originally, the island was called Gunsando (群山島), but during the reign of King Sejong in the Joseon Dynasty, a naval base was relocated to the mainland. As a result, the name Gunsan was transferred to the mainland, and the area was renamed Gogunsan (古群山).
During the Goryeo Dynasty, Seonyudo was a stopover point for trade routes between Goryeo and the Song Dynasty and was home to the naval base Gunsanjin (群山鎭). It also played a crucial role in the Battle of Jinpo (鎭浦海戰), where General Choi Mu-seon achieved victory against Japanese raiders. During the Imjin War, Admiral Yi Sun-sin stayed on the island for eleven days after his triumph in the Battle of Myeongnyang to reorganize his fleet.
Today, Seonyudo boasts stunning natural landscapes, including Myeongsasimni Beach and the Eight Scenic Views of Seonyu, making it a beloved travel destination for tourists. Visiting this island and enjoying its serene beauty like an immortal sounds like a wonderful experience!
