Prefix and Suffix An affix is a morpheme that is attached to a root word to form a new word. There are two types of affixes; suffixes and prefixes A prefix is a word part added to the beginning of a word or base word. Examples, pre, un, dis, de, ex, il, im, non, in, mis, Prefix de- Meaning from, down, away, reverse, opposite dis- ex- il- im- not, opposite, reverse, away out of, away from, lacking, former not not, without Examples decode, decrease disagree, disappear exhale, explosion illegal, illogical impossible, improper
A suffix is a word part added to the end of a word. Examples: ness, ed, ment, ly, less, able, er, est Suffix Meaning -able able to, having the quality of -er comparative -est superlative -ful full of -less without, not affected by -ly forming an adverb Examples comfortable, portable bigger, stronger strongest, tiniest beautiful, grateful friendless, tireless clearly, hourly
Use of Language Adjectives Adjectives are words that describe or modify a noun or a pronoun by describing. identifying or quantifying words. It normally indicates quality, size, age, shape, colour and opinion. Example: She saw the princess wearing an expensive necklace. The word 'expensive' describes the noun (necklace). The story about the 'Clever Crow' is full of interesting adjectives which add to the atmosphere of the fable. Find the adjectives in the sentences and write them on the space provided. a. Please, spare my eggs, dear friend. day b. 'Let us live like good neighbours and not disturb each other', the crow said. good - Whenever the crow laid eggs, the snake would eat them up. d. The crow felt helpless. helplier e. The crow felt angry and she thought, "I must teach that snake a lesson." f. With big sticks, they beat the snake and killed it. big g. The crow was happy. happy h. "Now my eggs will be safe," she thought and flew away happily.
