Once upon a time in the 90s, the soda industry found benzene in various soft drinks. This obviously made people feel some type of way, and quickly led to changes in the formulation of sodas. But how did this happen in the first place (from a chemistry standpoint), and how did we make sure that it wouldn't happen again? Follow me on a wild chemistry ride dissecting how this was discovered in the first place, and how two innocuous substances — sodium benzoate and Vitamin C — came together to form one of the most carcinogenic things that has ever existed.
