Southern Cape: MUSSELCRACKER/BRUSHER Fishing Adventure!!

The target is Mussel Cracker, BIG Mussel Cracker.

It was the perfect start to the day, not a breath of wind, cool, calm seas. The next minute, I got picked up, the fish dropped the bait. next throw the same thing. Then my mate Henri threw a BIG red crab in the hole, he got absolutely flattened by a good cracker. What a thrill and I was super stoked for Henri to get a good fish, not the monster we were after but still a good fish.

These Cracker or Brusher are super strong fighters, especially the first 10-20sec of the fight. If you can stop the Mussel Cracker or Brusher in the first +- 30sec, then 90% of the time the fish is yours. That being said, you still need the proper tackle to handle these Mussel Cracker.

Best baits for the Mussel Cracker or Brusher are, Red Crabs, cockles/alikreukel & Black Mussels. Red Crab being my favorite for the Mussel Cracker or Brusher. There are other mollusks which they eat, unfortunately these are illegal to harvest when looking for bait for the Mussel Cracker or Brusher and these are Siffies & perlemoen.
