ISRAEL - House of Lehi - בית לויה

Beit Lehi Ruins
These are the ruins of an ancient Israelite settlement from around 1000 B.C. The ruins are just 5 km from the ancient Hebrew city of Lachish, which is mentioned several times in the Bible.
Beit Lehi means “house of the jawbone” and may refer to the biblical site at which Samson slew a thousand Philistines with the jawbone of a donkey. In one of the burial caves several Hebrew writings were found, one reads "Yahweh (is) the God of the whole earth; the mountains of Judah belong to him, to the God of Jerusalem". This is one of the oldest known appearances found in Hebrew of the word Jerusalem.
The site is only accessible via 4x4 vehicle and only at certain times of the week because it is located within a closed military zone.
During the Great Jewish revolt against the Roman armies (66-70) A.D. the rebel's dug up many tunnels here. These tunnels were used as a means for hiding, escaping and for tactical warfare.
In the 4th century A.D. during the Byzantine period a Church was built here, believing that this was the home of Lehi, who according to the book of Mormon was an Israelite who in 600 B.C. lived in Jerusalem. In that book, Lehi with friends and family left the Holy Land of Israel by boat and sailed to the new promised land – the America's.
Today there is a city in the state of Utah country called Lehi.
The Church mosaic floors have been excavated and can be seen today. In one of the caves a Greek inscription reads "Jesus was here".
During the Mamluk era (1250 - 1516 AD), all human and animal figures depicted in these mosaics had been scratched off by the Muslims, in accordance to their religion.
