Ladies, choose wisely.
When patients come to me and consider embryo freezing with a partner I always remind them that you cannot UN-fertilize embryos. So theyre committing to having a child with that partnersperm donor if they use those embryos.

It is also important to keep in mind general legal considerations related to embryo freezing

1. Consent and ownership Before embryos can be frozen, there are usually legal requirements for obtaining informed consent from both partners or individuals involved. Both parties with legal ownership of embryos MUST consent before an embryo can be used.

2. Disposition decisions In situations where the individuals who created the embryos separate or divorce or if one or both partners pass away, legal frameworks typically address the disposition of the embryos. These decisions can involve agreements made in advance, court determinations, or specific legal provisions that govern the circumstances.

3. Parental rights and responsibilities The legal status of embryos may have implications for parental rights and responsibilities. Different jurisdictions have different laws regarding the recognition of embryos as legal entities, which can impact matters such as custody, inheritance, and decision-making.

4. Donor anonymity and identity In cases where donor gametes (sperm or eggs) are used to create embryos, legal aspects related to donor anonymity and identity may come into play. Laws surrounding the disclosure of donor information can vary, affecting the rights and privacy of all parties involved.

5. Embryo disposition after death Some jurisdictions have specific laws addressing the disposition of embryos in the event of the death of one or both partners. These laws may dictate whether the embryos can be donated to others, used for research purposes, or otherwise disposed of.

If this all seems like a lot- and someone is not so sure about committing to embryos with a partner- I will counsel them to consider freezing eggs instead- or doing two separate cycles egg freezing on their own embryo freezing with a partner.
