Paganism did not disappear, it adapted.

Paganism is any system of belief or practice that replaces the worship of the Creator with traditions, rituals, symbols, or practices rooted in human invention or nature worship.

“They exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator.” - Romans 1:25

Paganism in the Bible

God consistently warned His people not to adopt the religious practices of surrounding nations.

“Take heed to yourself that you are not ensnared to follow them… saying, ‘How did these nations serve their gods?’ I also will do likewise.”
Deuteronomy 12:30

Pagan worship often involved:

Sun worship

Idol veneration

Seasonal festivals

Rituals borrowed into worship

God made it clear that He alone is to be worshiped, according to His instructions—not human preference.

“You shall have no other gods before Me.” - Exodus 20:3

Paganism and Compromise in Christianity

History shows that when Christianity sought popularity and power, pagan practices were absorbed to make the faith more acceptable to the masses. This blending of truth and error resulted in traditions that lack biblical authority.

Jesus warned:

“In vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.” - Matthew 15:9

Ellen G. White writes:

“The great apostasy was to be developed by the union of paganism and Christianity.” - The Great Controversy, p. 50

An End-Time Issue of Worship

Bible prophecy reveals that the final conflict will center on worship-whether humanity will worship the Creator or follow systems influenced by pagan tradition and human authority.

“Fear God and give glory to Him… worship Him who made heaven and earth.” - Revelation 14:7

This is why the Sabbath, established at Creation, stands in direct contrast to pagan sun worship—it points us back to the true Creator.

“The seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God.”
Exodus 20:10
