Dave deBronkart was working as a hi-tech marketing professional outside Boston and leading what probably could be regarded as a a fairly ”normal life”. But one day in 2007, his world was turned upside down. Starting with a doctor’s appointment, he found out that he was practically dead from cancer. He was expected to live another 24 weeks – but today, he is well.

He recieved top health care at the hospital and joined an online patient community where he found advice that probably helped save his life. Today, he is known as ”E-patient Dave” and is one of the world’s most prominent advocates for patient engagement and participatory medicine – meaning that the patients actively collaborates with their clinicians. He is an accomplished speaker who did one of the most viewed TED Talks of all time, has written several books and had his writings published in a number of major magazines. Two years ago, The National Library of Medicine decided to include hos blog, www.epatientdave.com, in its History of Medicine.

Dave held a moving and highly engaging speech on what happens how online connectivity can turn a patient from a passive reciever of medicine and into an active collaborator in the health care process.
