Many people believe that prints are just mass-produced copies of artworks that are not that valuable or worth purchasing, but that’s not true at all. Prints can be just as valuable as any other artwork. In fact, some prints have been sold for seven to eight-figure prices at auctions.
Buying prints can be an affordable option for collectors to acquire pieces by artists, sometimes allowing them to acquire an entire collection from that artist. Since they cost only a fraction of the price of the original painting, prints are also a great way for new art collectors to start their collections. Unlimited edition prints or open editions, can be reproduced an infinite number of times. However, limited editions are made in limited amounts. The artist determines the number of prints and once that number has been reached, it will not be printed again. Small editions prints reach a higher value than large edition prints. Every print in a limited edition is numbered, usually in pencil at the bottom of the print. This fractional number shows the print’s position in the edition. The print run number determines the value of a print.
The denominator will show you how many prints were printed in one edition. The numerator will show you when each print was created during the run. So if you purchase a print that says 12/100 number on your piece, that means that you have the 12th print from the edition that contains a total of 100 prints... the smaller the number the bigger the value!
