On May 9, 1995, one of the most underrated F3 tornados would occur outside of the small city of Walnut, Illinois. This was part of an extensive tornado outbreak across the mid-west. 42 total tornadoes were confirmed, 5 of which were rated as F3. Of these F3 tornadoes, was the aforementioned one to strike Walnut. Historically, it’s been overshadowed not only by the tornadoes that day, but those in the area throughout time. This comes as a surprise, since it was extremely impressive for multiple reasons. One being it was in the middle of the afternoon, and it was able to tear apart structures. But, more importantly, it was one of few “twin tornadoes” to occur throughout time. But this wasn’t just any set of twins, it was two, very close together photogenic twisters. One was the F3, which grew into a large cone tornado. The other was a slightly weaker FU (unrated), which seemed to have been a small cone-like twister. For time, and really until this day, very little has been known about these gorgeous twisters. But, we got an incredible HQ glimpse into them in February. Cue in @ILWXTorSpotter (X account). He lives in Illinois and over the past years began to research the tornadoes in his area. One he especially found interest in was the F3 to strike Walnut. So, he’s had (and used) a rare chance to hear first hand accounts of the tornado. With that, he’s been able to collect info on every picture, witness and damage point from the tornado. Luckily, in February, he struck gold. For a bit before then, he had learned of a videographer “Sid Attig”, who supposedly recorded the tornado. So, he dug into Mr. Attig and looked far and wide for a way to receive this footage. Thankfully, his father ended up finding Mr. Attig, and Hayden received a raw copy of the tornado. He quickly scanned it and shared it with all of the world. Unfortunately, it got way to little attention. So, as i’ve been able to built up this channel, I asked Hayden if I could share this footage and he said yes!
