During a recent weightlifting seminar in Poland, one session specifically focused on the squat jerk caught my attention.
I identified a common issue among participants: the tendency to arch the lower back rather than engaging the hips properly during the overhead squat.
Recognising that the habit of over-engaging the lower back was ingrained in many, I shifted gears to introduce breathing exercises designed to open up the lumbo-pelvic area. I guided the athletes into the child's pose, placing their heads on their hands to relax the upper back.
Participants were then instructed to take deep breaths, directing the inhalation all the way to the butt. This facilitated expansion in both the lower and upper back areas, which were otherwise constrained by tightness, limited T-spine mobility, and a lack of elasticity in the thoracolumbar fascia.
It's crucial to understand that an effective core should resemble an air-filled Swiss ball rather than a rigid rock. After a few minutes of targeted breathing exercises, marked improvements were evident. Athletes started executing the squat with better hip engagement and significantly reduced lower back hyperextension.
Sometimes, if you find it difficult to sit down properly, it's not a matter of insufficient effort; rather, your body may be lacking the proper alignment.
Train like a human before you train like an athlete.
