Hormuz Island, located near the Persian Gulf and often called the “Rainbow Island,” is known for its unique geological features and naturally red soil. Scientists explain that the red color is caused by iron oxide, particularly a mineral called hematite, which is found in high concentration in the island’s soil. During heavy rains, this mineral-rich soil washes down from the hills into the sea, creating a deep red appearance as it rapidly oxidizes when mixed with water. Interestingly, the same mineral hematite is also responsible for the red appearance of Mars. Locals call this red soil “Gelack,” which is not only used for natural coloring but is also added to traditional dishes for flavor. Experts confirm that it is harmless to humans.
