Taunton Mayor Shaunna O'Connell reached a deal with prosecutors Thursday, ending her domestic assault case as she was set to go on trial.

It's not technically a guilty plea, but she admitted in court to assaulting her husband. In return, the case goes away in six months if she stays out of trouble.

O’Connell arrived at the Attleboro courthouse with her husband, whom she was accused of hitting with a small metal tool and biting at their home in July, and then sitting on his car as he tried to leave.

In court documents she recently filed, O’Connell claimed self-defense. She claimed she confronted her husband about another woman and that he grabbed her first when she threatened to call police.

The agreement with prosecutors comes as the case was scheduled for trial Thursday. No trial means no testimony from police about what happened.
