He’s one of the lesser talked about halfbacks of the 90s, one of the most underrated dual threat players in NFL history and there’s a great argument that he’s a Hall of Fame caliber player, yet Ricky Watters doesn’t seem to get his due. He’s known best for his 4 word quote, uttered after he didn’t extend for a pass during his time with the Philadephia Eagles: For who? For what?” Those 4 words have cast a cloud on an otherwise incredible career which saw Watters run wild over NFL defenses for a decade, retiring as a member of the 10,000 rushing yards club and racking up nearly 15000 yards from scrimmage. Prior to his infamous quote, he had began to make a name for himself as a do It all player on some loaded Notre Dame Fighting Irish teams, then after sitting out his rookie year with the 49ers; he came back and acted as a perfect replacement for the great Roger Craig, alongside Steve Young and Jerry Rice, helping the 49ers win Super Bowl 29. Then even though his Eagles career got off to a rocky start, he would rush for nearly 4000 yards during his three years on the team, pairing with a young Charlie Garner. Then he would finish off his career in Seattle, crossing the 1200 in each of his first three seasons there before suffering an injury in the 2001 season and losing his spot to a young Shaun Alexander. So even though his career ended uneventfully, his 10 years in the league were anything but uneventful, as the brash and confident Watters played the game his way, and never changed who he was, and he had every right to do that, because he backed it up every Sunday.
