While Cologne is the largest city of North Rhine-Westphalia. With its Schildergasse Cologne has the busiest shopping street in Europe, according to a 2008 survey by GfK. The street dates back to Roman times, when it was the city's Decumanus Maximus. On the other hand Berlin is home to the famous KaDeWe department store, and the city’s most fashionable area is the Kurfürstendamm. Cologne's location on the river Rhine placed it at the intersection of the major trade routes between east and west. The intersection of these trade routes were the basis of Cologne's growth. Most of the city lies on the left bank of the river Rhine, while Berlin lies in the wide glacial valley of the Spree River. The Spree is the main river of Berlin, Brandenburg, Lusatia, and the settlement area of the Sorbs, who call the River Sprjewja.
