The deal, expected to be signed by August 31, 2025, ensures a steady supply of engines to support HAL's production timeline for the Mk1A, which aims to deliver the first aircraft by early 2026 and complete the order by 2030. The F404's reliability, demonstrated in the Tejas Mk1 and global platforms like the Boeing F/A-18 Hornet, makes it a cornerstone of the Mk1A program.
the contract for the 97 Mk1A jets is expected to be finalized by December 2025, with a total cost estimated at ?67,000 crore (approximately $8 billion). This deal builds on the 2021 contract for 83 Mk1A jets, valued at ?48,000 crore, and includes infrastructure upgrades for IAF squadrons. The GE F404 engine order ensures that HAL can maintain production momentum, avoiding delays caused by supply chain bottlenecks, a challenge faced in earlier phases of the Tejas program.
