STORYLINE:
The sound of the rain and far off explosions could be heard in the empty streets of Bohorodychne on Friday, a village in the Donetsk region retaken by the Ukrainian forces on September 12.
The little village, known for its church the Holy Mother of God 'Joy of All Who Sorrow, has become a ghost town.
A Ukrainian flag was seen flying in the tower of the church, while the building's walls have been left covered in marks from the shrapnel of the dozens of bombs, rockets and shells that have destroyed almost every single house and building in the village.
The church and the nearby convent that, according to the Ukrainian Institute, are part of the historical and architectural heritage of the country, were used as a shelter by the residents until May, when they were hit by a strike.
A sign reading "mines" continued to alert people to the possible unexploded devices that may have been left in the area by Russian forces.
In the empty streets, a serviceman walked by one of the several craters. A cat and several dogs were also seen looking for food amongst the damage.
The bridge that used to connect Bohorodychne with the city of Sviatohirsk, well known for its monastery, was completely destroyed months ago.
While Ukraine has kept up its counteroffensive to try and retake occupied areas, Moscow has continued attacking the east of the country.
Heavy fighting has continued in the Donetsk area, where Russian attacks have targeted Toretsk, Sloviansk and several smaller towns.
Russian shelling in Nikopol and Marhanets on the western bank of the Dnieper River killed two people and wounded nine, officials said on Friday.
