In this video, we'll learn some phrasal verbs to express our health problems.
In the conversation, we spotted some phrasal verbs:
1. Come down with – when you come down with flu, you start to become ill, usually with a disease that is not very serious, like flu or cold
You would probably come down with flu when your immune system is weak and someone near you is sick or has fever.
So, use this phrasal verb when you want to say that you start to become sick.
2. Block-up – is an adjective form; if your nose is blocked-up, it is filled so that you are unable to breathe normally
This is the same with “clogged nose” or “nasal congestion” like, you cannot breathe because your nose is clogged and you breathe through your mouth – so, your nose is blocked-up, that’s a useful phrasal verb.
3. Shake off – when you can’t shake off your cold, you can’t get rid of it. To shake off means to get rid of something
Like you have a cold, and you drink lemon tea with honey and ginger just to remove that cold, to shake off that cold.
4. Fight off – when you fight off a sore throat, you try hard to get rid of it.
Fight off is kinda similar with shake off. But when you fight off, you really try hard with different alternatives just to treat your illness. Like you have sore throat and you gargle salt water, drink ginger tea, you drink lozenges or throat pastille just to really get rid of it, so you fight it off.
5. Throw up – when you throw up, you vomit.
It’s an informal way to say “vomit”. Like when you drink a lot of alcohol, and you throw up after. Or if the food you eat is not fresh anymore, you’ll have a tendency to throw up.
6. Pass out – when you pass out, you faint or become unconscious
You would probably pass out when you have lack of sleep, or the weather is too hot, or when you get suffocated in a stuffy place that you can’t breathe, you tend to faint or to pass out.
7. Pull through – when you pull through, you recover from a serious illness.
Just like when you are really sick or have an operation or surgery, and you start becoming well after suffering from it, then you are expected to pull through.
There you go! So, the next time, you’ll see a doctor, try using these phrasal verbs to help you express your health problems better.
