It was not long ago when the venture capital business was predominantly local. Investors on Sand Hill Road were known for their affinity for ventures in their own back yard. It was unusual to find a Silicon Valley based firm investing in a east coast deal, or vice versa. Welcome to the "flat world" of 2013 where many US venture firms are getting on long haul flights to invest not only in the BRIC countries, but now into the pioneer markets such as Turkey, Indonesia, and Poland. Investors are seeking outsized returns in "rising tide economies", where GDP growth is many times that of the US. In addition, partly due to restrictive US immigration policies, many Valley based entrepreneurs are recognizing the opportunities and returning to their home countries and launching startups. Therefore it is possible that the next great startup may indeed come from outside of the US. This panel will focus on the premise of investing globally and its implications for the VC industry, and the state of global entrepreneurship.
