The hp heater and lp heater or high pressure heater and low pressure heater are basically shell and tube heat exchanger. These heaters improve the cycle efficiency and increase power generation of the plant. The Thermal Power Plant is working on rankine cycle and the feed water heaters are the part of this regenerative rankine cycle which allow the feedwater to be brought up to the saturation temperature very gradually. Preheating the feedwater reduces the irreversibilities involved in steam generation and therefore improves the thermodynamics efficiency of the system.
This video explain the performance of hp heater (hph) like TTD, DCA, temperature rise etc. Effects of tube plugging on HPH performance are also discussed.
