"It's an obligation for me to remember all the terror of this regime in which freedom did not exist. It was a totalitarian regime. There was no freedom of the press, no freedom of speech, no freedom of association. We couldn't even protest. We couldn't even circulate (in the streets). There was a peace reminiscent of a cemetery. If we wanted to exist we had to be part of the regime. We didn't have any rights. That was Jean-Claude Duvalier."

"They (the governments since Duvalier's departure in 86) have also been involved in violations of human rights for the last 25 years. They have killed, they have stolen too. But, their crimes did not erase Baby Doc's or his father's crimes. I am for true justice. I am convinced there is no judicial mechanism that can give a real justice. That's the dilemma."

"Because these crimes were generalised, were widespread in Haiti under his government, these constitute actually crimes against humanity and they're not prescriptable, so there is no lapse of time after which these crimes can no longer be prosecuted or the perpetrators can no longer be prosecuted. So this is one chance we've got, one golden opportunity, not only for the victims to obtain justice and reparation, but also for the Haitian state to actually put an end to the impunity."
