Описание к видео Greek Fire: Byzantium's Lost Secret Weapon Finally Recreated

GREEK FIRE: THE SECRET WEAPON OF BYZANTIUM

For over 500 years, Byzantium possessed a weapon so terrifying it reshaped naval warfare. It burned on water, clung to ships and men, and could not be extinguished. Enemies called it “lightning from heaven.” Then its formula vanished for 800 years—until modern science finally proved how it worked.

WHAT WAS GREEK FIRE?

Byzantine names:

Liquid fire (ὑγρὸν πῦρ)

Sea fire (θαλάσσιον πῦρ)

Prepared fire (ἐσκευασμένον)

Sticky fire (κολλητικόν)

Period of use: 674–1204 AD
Core ingredient: Light petroleum crude oil
Source: Caucasus region (Taman Peninsula, Black Sea coast, eastern Anatolia)

This oil was ideal: highly flammable, low viscosity, and naturally seeping from the ground—easy to collect and deadly when ignited.

HOW IT WORKED

Greek Fire was not thrown. It was projected.

The Device (Siphon):

Double-cylinder bronze force pump

Heated fuel reservoir (~60°C to reduce viscosity)

Bronze pipes with swivel joints

One-way valves to control flow

Directional bronze nozzle

Ignition torch at the mouth

Fuel mixture: crude oil + pine resin
Range: 10–15 meters
Temperature: over 1,000°C

The result was a roaring jet of flame that burned on water, stuck to surfaces, and filled the air with thick black smoke.

FIRST USE: SAVING CONSTANTINOPLE
Arab Sieges (674–678 & 717–718 AD):

Byzantine fire-bearing warships shattered Arab fleets and saved Constantinople—twice. Greek Fire ensured the empire’s survival when defeat seemed inevitable.

THE BATTLE OF 941 AD ⭐

Prince Igor of Kievan Rus attacked Constantinople with 1,000+ boats. Byzantium had only 15 aging warships—each fitted with multiple siphons.

When the Rus closed in, the Byzantines unleashed Greek Fire.

Contemporary accounts describe fire pouring from bronze tubes, continuing to burn even on the sea. Survivors leapt into the water—only for the flames to follow them.

The Rus fleet was annihilated. Igor fled. The psychological impact was immense. Enemies believed Byzantium wielded a supernatural weapon.

DEPLOYMENT & LIMITATIONS

Mounted on warships (dromons)

Operated by 3 crew per siphon

Required calm seas

Extremely short range

Dangerous but well-protected by shields, bulwarks, and fireproofing

A hand-held version (cheirosiphon) existed for sieges and infantry combat, likely influencing later Islamic fire weapons.

THE SECRET

The formula was guarded obsessively:

Restricted to the imperial family

Components manufactured separately

Severe penalties for disclosure

Emperor Constantine VII warned:
“Never reveal the secret of liquid fire… it was revealed by an angel.”

Even when captured, enemies lacked the oil sources, metallurgy, and full system knowledge to reproduce it.

WHY IT DISAPPEARED

Greek Fire depended on secure access to Caucasus oil. As Byzantium weakened:

Trade routes collapsed

Black Sea access was lost

Naval power declined

In 1204, Constantinople was sacked during the Fourth Crusade. The imperial system collapsed. Artificers were killed or scattered. The secret vanished.

THE 800-YEAR MYSTERY—SOLVED (2002)

A modern experiment led by historian John Haldon recreated Greek Fire using only ancient technology.

Result:
✔ Petroleum-based fuel
✔ Force-pump projection
✔ 15-meter flame jet
✔ Burned on water
✔ Could not be extinguished

The weapon worked exactly as Byzantine sources described.

Greek Fire was real.

WHY IT MATTERS

World’s first liquid flamethrower

Direct ancestor of modern incendiary weapons

Saved Byzantium for centuries

A masterpiece of ancient engineering and secrecy

The weapon that burned on water.
Byzantium’s shield for 530 years.
Lost for 800 years.
Finally understood.
