Think you know just how big the biggest fish ever caught is? Today, we’re giving you all the details on 17 of the fiercest beasts in the ocean. From prehistoric Groupers to Billfish and more Sharks than you can imagine – we’re covering them all.

This list covers only officially approved "IGFA All-Tackle World Records." While bigger fish have certainly been caught over the years, they were either hooked by more than one person or failed to meet IGFA World Record requirements.

17. Goliath Grouper – 680 lb
Angler Lynn Joyner caught the first fish on this list in Fernandina Beach, back in 1961. Regulators have since banned the harvesting of Goliath Grouper due to dwindling populations so it looks like Lynn’s record is here to stay.

16. Bull Shark – 697 lb 12 oz
Angler Ronald de Jager reeled in the first Shark to make this list off the coast of Malindi, Kenya in 2001.

15. Dusky Shark – 764 lb
Yep, another Shark. This 764-pound Dusky Shark was caught in 1982 off of Longboat Key, Florida by angler Warren Girle.

14. Thresher Shark – 767 lb
The credit here goes to New Zealand angler David Hannah, who reeled in this beast back in 1983.

13. Bigeye Thresher Shark – 802 lb
Dianne North, the first female angler on our list, reeled in this Bigeye Tresher Shark just 30 miles away from the previous record holder. She locked hers in even earlier, in 1981.

12. Pacific Bluefin Tuna – 907 lb 6 oz.
Over on Three King Islands, New Zealand angler Donna Pascoe battled this Pacific Bluefin for nearly 4 hours. Hers was also voted the Best World Record of 2014.

11. Swordfish – 1,182 lb
The first fish to surpass the 1000 pound mark, Lou Marron’s record-holding Swordfish was caught way back in 1953 off the coast of Iquique, Chile.

10. Shortfin Mako Shark – 1,221 lb
Angler Luke Sweeny reeled in this fierce Mako during a tournament in Chatham, Massachusetts back in 2001.

9. Great Hammerhead Shark – 1,280 lb
Charter Captain Bucky Davis usually stays in Boca Grande’s inshore waters. This massive Hammerhead hauled his boat 12 miles into the Gulf, though.

8. Sixgill Shark – 1,298 lb
The credit for this rare catch goes to angler Clemmens Rump who landed this beast off the coast of Ascension Island in 2002.

7. Pacific Blue Marlin – 1,376 lb
Jay de Beaubien landed this magnificent Marlin in just under an hour at Kaaiwi Point, Kona, Hawaii in 1982.

6. Atlantic Blue Marlin – 1,402 lb 2 oz
Trolling off the coast of Victoria, Brazil angler Paulo Amorim has held the Atlantic Blue Marlin record since 1992.

5. Atlantic Bluefin Tuna – 1,496 lb
Nova Scotia is famous for its Bluefin Tuna fishery, so it’s no wonder angler Ken Fraser’s 1979 record was caught here.

4. Black Marlin – 1,560 lb
Alfred C. Glassell Jr. is an angling legend. This massive Black Marlin is one of the reasons why. It was caught off of Cabo Blanco, Peru in 1953.

3. Greenland Shark – 1,708 lb 9 oz
Norwegian angler Terje Nordvedt caught one of the biggest Sharks ever in Norwegian waters back in 1987.

2. Tiger Shark – 1,785 lb 11 oz
Kevin J. Clapson’s 2004 record, caught in Ulladulla, Australia, is actually a tie with angler Walter Maxwell’s catch from 1964.

1. Great White Shark – 2,664 pounds
Alfred Dean’s 1959 record is by far the biggest on this list. Considering harvesting of Great Whites is prohibited in most of the world today, it looks like his record won’t be beaten.
