My Artifact, Episode 3,499
How Do I Set Up a Safe Online Payment Option for My Business?
Hello, hello! This is My Artifact, episode number 3,499.
Today’s date is July 23, 2025, and the time is 10:46 p.m. It’s a late-night recording, and I feel ready to jump right into the question. So, let’s go!

The Question
How do I set up a safe online payment option for my business?
Now, I think I may have asked this question before, but even if I did, it’s worth talking about again. This one matters because it connects directly to the world of business and startups.
I’ve said it before: I want to start my own business, but right now I don’t have much practical knowledge. Asking myself questions like this helps me prepare in advance. Since 90% of startups fail within five years, often because of small mistakes, I want to get ahead of those mistakes now.
This particular question is about handling online payments safely—because when money is involved, things get tricky.

The Customer’s Point of View
When I pay at a physical store with cash, it feels secure. I hand money directly to the shopkeeper, they accept it, and the transaction is complete. There’s no third person, no gap, nothing hidden. It’s transparent, simple, and safe.
But online transactions? That’s a whole different game.
As a customer, when I pay online, I just hope the money reaches the seller. Yes, systems are generally secure, and I personally feel safe when I buy things online. But the average customer still wonders:
Did my money really reach the owner?

What if something goes wrong?

That little bit of doubt always exists.

My Responsibility as a Business Owner
If I’m running a business, my first priority is to make sure:
The customer’s money is safe.

If something goes wrong—like internet cuts during checkout—they either complete the payment smoothly or get their money back.

Basically, I want the online experience to feel as safe as handing cash in person. Transparent, smooth, and trustworthy.

The Behind-the-Scenes Reality
Here’s what I know: online transactions may look simple to customers, but the backend is extremely complex and expensive.
Think about it. Every time you enter card details or pay with UPI, there’s:
Encryption to protect card numbers.

Two-factor authentication (like OTP codes).

Fraud detection checks.

Biometric options (like fingerprint or face scans).

All this has to happen in seconds, across millions of payments every day. Building and maintaining that system yourself is a nightmare—especially for a small startup. Testing it for speed, smoothness, and security costs a fortune.

The Middleman Solution
That’s why companies like Razorpay or PayPal exist.
Think of them as trusted middlemen. When a customer clicks “Buy,” they’re redirected to the payment portal (like Razorpay). That service securely handles the payment and then passes the money to me, the business owner.
Why do we need this middleman? Because for a small company, building such a system from scratch is way too costly and complicated. Instead, I can rely on these portals. They already have the infrastructure, the encryption, the servers, and the trust.
In India, Razorpay is a popular option. Globally, PayPal is widely used. There are other gateways too, but these two are the ones I know best right now.

My Business Model and Payment Choice
In my case, I’m planning to build a services-based app. Here’s how I see it working:
The app will be free to use with ads.

Customers who don’t want ads can pay for a premium version.

So, payments will definitely be part of my business. And at least in the early stages, I’d use Razorpay or PayPal to handle transactions. It makes everything smooth and credible.
Later, when my company is established and I can afford it, I might build my own payment gateway. But until then, I’ll rely on trusted services that already do the job well.

Wrapping Up
So, to answer the question:
Safe online payments matter because they protect customer trust.

Building your own system is too expensive for a startup.

Middleman services like Razorpay or PayPal are the best choice early on.

That’s how I’d set up payments for my future business.
Alright—that’s it for today. Thank you for listening!
