In ancient times, desire played a central and complex role, often seen as the fundamental driver of human existence and spiritual growth. Desire is understood not only as a natural human inclination but as the very foundation of creation and our connection to the divine.
1. Desire as the Engine of Creation
The universe and all of creation emerged from divine desire. The Creator, God, The Source, is seen as an infinite source of light and energy. This light creates and fills all existence, manifesting through various levels of desire, which is understood to be the primary force that drives everything.
Desire is not inherently negative or positive; it’s simply a force. Using our desires shapes our spiritual progress and relationship with the Creator.
2. Desire and the Soul’s Journey
According to Ancient Teachers, the human soul is on a journey to refine its desires. The soul begins with basic, self-centered desires, like the desire for comfort, security, and physical pleasure. Over time, through spiritual practices, one refines these desires to reach higher, more selfless forms that align with divine purpose.
This refinement is often described as elevating one’s desires from receiving for oneself alone (egoistic desires) to a desire to give and to connect with others and with the divine.
3. The Concept of ‘Receiving in Order to Give’
A central teaching in ancient times is the transformation of desire into a state of “receiving in order to give.” This means one learns to enjoy the blessings of life, not solely for self-benefit but as a way to share, uplift, and connect with others. This transformation reflects the Creator’s own selfless giving nature and aligns one’s desires with divine purpose.
By shifting focus from self-centered to other-centered desires, individuals spiritually evolve and come closer to experiencing unity with the Creator.
4. Desire and the channels through which God reveals HIS will.
The Sefirot are ten attributes or emanations through which the infinite light flows to create and sustain the universe. Each of these attributes embodies different aspects of divine will and desire. As we refine our desires, we experience and express these divine attributes more fully in our lives.
For example, the Sefirot of Hesed (Loving-kindness) encourages desires for compassion and generosity, while Gevurah (Strength) embodies discipline and boundaries.
5. Overcoming the Desire for Ego or ‘Receiving for the Self Alone’
In ancient times, people believed, that the ego was associated with the desire to receive solely for one’s own benefit, which is considered the root of human suffering and separation from the divine. The spiritual path seeks to transform these desires, channeling them into those that connect and uplift rather than isolate.
Through study, meditation, and mindful action, one aims to transcend self-focused desires, replacing them with a desire for spiritual connection and alignment with a higher purpose.
6. The Ultimate Desire: Cleaving to the Divine
The highest form of desire is the yearning for God, or “cleaving” to the divine. This state is a form of spiritual attachment, where one’s entire being and desires align with the will and presence of God. It’s seen as the ultimate fulfillment of desire, where one’s individual will merges with the divine.
In essence, this spiritual teaching holds that desire is the divine spark within each person. When directed toward connection, giving, and a higher purpose, it becomes a bridge that uplifts the soul, bringing it closer to its true source.
