S1 – Ep 298 – Hankey – A Town we Explored in the Gamtoos Valley!

During our visit to Hankey in the Gamtoos Valley, we explored the town and learned so much about its rich history. We arrived at our accommodation late in the afternoon and set out to explore the next day. Our first stop was the old station, a relic of the town's past that gave us a glimpse into its history. We marvelled at the old railway bridge and imagined what life might have been like during its heyday. Next, we happened upon the graves of the preacher who started the settlement in 1822. What an amazing find! One of the highlights of our visit was our search for the irrigation tunnel which was dug by hand. We were impressed by the ingenuity and tenacity of the system and the dedication of the men who had dug it so many years ago. Finally, we visited the uncompleted Sarah Baartman Centre of Remembrance. What a tragic story the one of Sarah Baartman is. She was a Khoi woman who was exhibited as a freak show attraction in Europe in the early 19th century. We hope they can get the centre completed soon.
