Pleasant Hill Pioneer Cemetery: Whiskey, Blonds, and Quilts. Sheridan, Oregon. Polk County

Some say you gotta pay and go to a museum to experience the history of the past. However, today we learn a lesson that you can observe and take in the spirit of the past when you visit the secluded off the beaten path Pleasant Hill Pioneer Cemetery in Sheridan, Oregon for free.

In this episode you'll learn that whiskey apparently use to be much better in the early 1800s when we visit James Syron's resting place. What a life this guy lived as he made it to the age of 102 before he passed on. From the Jersey Shores (yuck), hitting up Cuba, to Ohio (yay), to Iowa (boring) and finally to Oregon we hear the story of his epic journey in life. To add, James loved the pipe, chewed tobacco, and drank whiskey heavily so good luck debating this one health nuts.

We have a lot of wagon train driver history here. Let's visit the Buell couple, the headstone of Catharine Graves, and finally Charles Howard. The Howards were a massive family but very tight with each other. However, a run in with the Sioux tribe almost changed that as Nancy Howard apparently was an attractive blond the native Americans took notice to.

You'll get to hear some animal factoids relating to gophers and horses. More specifically the famous Friesian horse breed.

We'll hear some quilt history along the Oregon trail as well. A topic that contains legends and lore.

Out of all the cemeteries I've visited this one had the most old school Oregon feel. The headstones were incredible and displayed some of the most amazing detail I've seen in awhile. I highly recommend a visit in the fall or winter as the morning fog gives it one of the most surreal experiences.
