Spicy Licks is back!

It’s been far too long since I made one of these so here we are with a brand new episode of Spicy Licks.

If you’re new here, this is a series on my channel where I take a lick that I have either written myself or learned from another player, I teach you it with TAB & notation on screen and after that I break down the theory behind it.

The reason for the last part is so that if you have an understanding of the fundamentals of music theory, you should be able to take that information and apply it to your own playing to come up with ideas of your own all across the fretboard and in multiple keys.

Today’s Spicy Lick is one I learned from an up and coming player from Italy whose name is Matteo Mancuso. Here are a few links to Matteo’s videos on YouTube:

Room 335 (Larry Carlton) -    • Room 335 (Larry Carlton) Matteo Mancu...
Blues Shuffle in G (the solo featured in this lesson!) -    • Matteo Mancuso - Blues Shuffle in G

Matteo’s lick is played over the turnaround in a 12 bar blues and it’s centered around a very unusual arpeggio that creates an interesting ‘outside’ sound that is quickly resolved when the progression repeats and you’re back to the I chord.
I hadn’t come across any licks that use this strange arpeggio before I heard Matteo’s solo. I’m familiar with more common outside sounds you can use in blues playing like the half-whole diminished and whole-tone scales but this lick had me stumped initially.

As I mention in the video, I’ve come up with my own way of conceptualizing it but if anyone watching feels they have a better idea of what it is and where it comes from, please do let me know by leaving a comment below and I’ll be very interested to hear your thoughts!

The bonus content for this lesson - available exclusively to members of bulletproofguitarplayer.com - includes a video of the solo with the TAB & notation overlaid (Guitar Pro & PDF files are available for download), a backing track video and downloadable WAV file, and FOUR bonus licks that use the same arpeggio with TAB files.
