In this historic Occupy Wall Street teach-in, Sander Hicks asks a dangerous question: what if we stopped fearing money and started using it to build radical social ventures?

Speaking in the occupied streets of New York, Sander challenges both Wall Street capitalism and left-wing taboos about money. Instead of treating money as “evil,” he reframes it as a kind of living force — like bacteria — that must grow by investing in something real. If we don’t direct it, it feeds corruption: Goldman Sachs, the Federal Reserve, endless wars, and economic inequality. But if we reclaim it, money can fuel cooperatives, worker-owned collectives, fair-trade cafés, and community spaces.

Sander draws on his own experience as a radical entrepreneur: founder of Soft Skull Press and the Brooklyn café Vox Pop, a fair-trade, culture-and-democracy hub that helped reduce neighborhood violence and bring people together. He connects this to the spirit of Occupy: the shared altar he built, the interfaith offerings, and the deeper truth at the heart of Buddhism, Christianity, and all peace traditions.

This talk introduces ideas like:
