How Does Memory Work?
Memory formation occurs in the hippocampus, this is the learning centre of the brain.
When you get a sensory input, you see, hear, smell, taste, or touch something, a neuronal connection forms in your brain, that is a sensory memory, which will disappear after a few seconds unless you give it attention, then the neuronal connection keeps firing and becomes a short term memory. This might last for a minute or two, but to transform it into a long term memory that can last for days, weeks, months, even years, you need to encode it!
Encoding a memory is basically strengthening the neuronal connection so that it become stronger and more memorable rather than shrinking away and being forgotten.
There are a few different ways you can encode your memories.
Somebody's name for example, you can write it down, you can repeat it to yourself, you can even visualise it in a funny way to help you strengthen that memory.
Memory Hacks
Tactics to Improve Memory
There are 6 things that you should be working on every day to improve your overall memory
Exercise- Boosts your mood, reduces stress and improves sleep, all of which promotes memory formation and retention.
Meditate-Research has proven that meditation in students helps to reduce stress and strengthen the hippocampus, helping them to remember more and do better in their exams.
Sleep-Your hippocampus replays memories in your sleep, consolidating them into long term memories. More sleep = better memory.
DRUGS! Avoid them, especially depressants like weed and alcohol, they suppress the hippocampus, reducing it’s ability to form and retain memories.
Supplements like Ginko Biloba and Omega 3 promote brain health and function, boosting your ability to learn and remember things.
Learning- The hippocampus is the centre for memory AND learning, so if you are learning new skills, you are exercising your hippocampus and increasing your ability to remember.
The Exercise
You can do this any time to train your memory. Simply use your smart phone to take a photo of something, anything, and try to remember as many details from the photo as you can. Set yourself a timer for a few minutes, then try to recall as many details as you can from the photo. This is a great way to practice encoding memories and promote memory formation and retention!
