U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday (January 3) the United States would continue to oversee its involvement in Venezuela “until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition,” signalling an open-ended U.S. role in the country.

Speaking at a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida, Trump said Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife were seized in an overnight operation and would face American justice, calling it one of the most successful military operations in U.S. history.

“This was one of the most stunning, effective and powerful displays of American military might and competence in American history,” Trump told reporters, adding that U.S. air, land and sea forces were used in the operation.
