Jurgen Klopp Has Taken An Unexpected Position On Accepting The USA Job Following The Copa America Defeat.
Former Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp might be interested in the United States men's national team position if U.S. Soccer decides to part ways with current head coach Gregg Berhalter.
U.S. Soccer is presently conducting a "comprehensive review" of the USMNT's performance at Copa America after the team failed to advance past the group stages. The USMNT was eliminated from the competition following a 1-0 loss to Uruguay on Monday, which came after a surprising 2-1 defeat to Panama on June 27.
Klopp, who is currently taking a break from coaching after leaving Liverpool at the end of last season, has not yet decided on his next move. However, he has indicated in a Q&A with The Athletic earlier this year that he would consider the USMNT role.
After spending nine years at Liverpool, Klopp acknowledged that he does not have the energy to continue at the same pace. "It's out of the question that I'll stop working altogether," Klopp told the Willipedia podcast after his departure from Liverpool. "But I don't see myself continuing at the same pace as before at the moment."
This admission has led fans to speculate that Klopp might be waiting for an ideal national team opportunity to arise, with The Athletic's Simon Hughes noting that only two national jobs are attractive to him: Germany and potentially the USA.
Berhalter is aware of the pressure and media speculation surrounding his position. Following the USMNT's exit from Copa America, he was asked if he is still the right person to lead the team. Berhalter responded with a straightforward "Yes" but admitted that the performances had not met expectations.
U.S. Soccer Federation sporting director Matt Crocker, who rehired Berhalter, has since issued a statement regarding the Copa America performance.
"Our tournament performance fell short of our expectations. We must do better," Crocker said. "We will be conducting a comprehensive review of our performance in Copa America and how best to improve the team and results as we look towards the 2026 World Cup."
