Overland Travel as a Fantasy Adventurer is much harder than it might seem. What would adventuring really be like while travelling? Who would survive?

Tolkien was right, adventures are "nasty, disturbing, uncomfortable things that make you late for dinner". Would an adventurer with below average strength or constitution even survive the journey?
