WEST ALEXANDRIA -- Prince sang it best, "Party like it's 1999." And that's exactly what's going on at Twin Valley South. The Panthers are 7-0 for the first time since 99. Which is the only year they made the playoffs and last time they beat Covington.
And this year the Panthers believe that 2014 will be trip number two to the postseason.
"You can just feel how proud these people are," head coach Tyler Cates said.
"There's a big difference when you just believe you can win. We actually believe we can win this year which is a big deal," senior running back Anthony Augspurger said.
Belief, it might sound cliche but that's been the difference for Twin Valley South. The Panthers have a belief unlike past years but that belief was put to the test early this season. Down 21-7 to National Trail at halftime in week two.
"Really showed us that we can handle adversity and how resilient these kids can be. They didn't bat an eye, coach we can do this. And that right there showed me that this team can be really special," Cates said.
And now that Twin Valley South is 7-0 that belief has only gotten stronger and it's become infectious too. The town of West Alexandria is over running with Panther pride.
Senior QB/S Wes Cole said, "it's very exciting having the whole town and community supporting us and always talking about us, it's great. They've been waiting for something like this to come along. I'm glad to be a part of this because i know this community can get something special going."
But to close the year Twin Valley South faces Tri-County North and Miami East, two teams that are a combined 14-1 this season.
"As we go into this backloaded part stretch of the season it really helps with our confidence, especially with the win against Covington," senior RT/DT Todd French said.
Cates added, "for us to go out and win the way we did was huge for this program and to show that we are getting better here."
Coming off a program defining win, undefeated and attracting more and more attention like our TV cameras there are more eyes than ever on this team.
"Not gonna lie, kind of difficult to really deal with all of it because it's new for us, we've never had to deal with it before," French said.
"They want to win so bad that honestly it hasn't been as difficult as we anticipated," Cates said. "You have to get better every day, you're going to play better people so we can't get complacent. Teams aren't scared of you, you have to earn that respect. Tri county north doesn't care that we're s7-0, Miami East doesn't care that we're 7-0."
"This point of time in the season is not what we're here for, we've got more in our mind," Augspurger said.
Belief, it's a simple idea but that's exactly what has Twin Valley South on the cusp of the program's second ever playoff appearance.
