David Berman wrote songs that highlighted the proximity of wonder and despair. They were an account of a lifelong battle with depression and its fallout. They were constantly original and often bitingly funny. His singular lyrical style, principally displayed through his work as the frontman of Silver Jews, soundtracked the lives of thousands of fans. Outside the SJ project, he drew cartoons and wrote acclaimed works of poetry.

Berman passed away on August 7th, 2019, less than a month after the debut album by his new outfit, Purple Mountains. A record that had once appeared as a phenomenal comeback became a parting note of tragic beauty.
