Food composition data describe the nutritional content of foods. They are fundamental in nutrition and health research and are essential to better understand how our food systems can become more conducive to healthy diets.
Depending on where and how our foods are grown and produced, the nutrient contents in foods can vary significantly. Each country has therefore specific data needs and collecting information on the composition of local foods is crucial to generate accurate and country-specific data. In this regard, FAO coordinates an international network of experts on food data systems, aiming to improve the quality, availability, reliability and use of food composition data worldwide.
