J.K. Rowling is famous for weaving alchemy throughout the Harry Potter series; is it possible she is doing the same thing in Fantastic Beasts 2: The Crimes of Grindelwald? Through the Comic-Con trailer and recently released images and interviews, join me as I pick out clues to how an alchemy experiment may be playing out in the upcoming film, one that directly involves Leta Lestrange and Credence Barebone, with Melusine perhaps being the alchemist. This video follows upon the last where we looked at Jacob Kowalski possibly becoming an alchemist apprentice.

Today, we’re starting with that very alchemical symbol Dumbledore showed Newt on the bridge in London. What exactly is it? In my reaction to the Comic-Con video, I initially thought it was something Grindelwald gave Dumbledore in their youth, combining symbols for both men into one. But I’ve had more time to research it and have a much better idea…one that eventually leads to Leta’s monster. Also, this video will involve some information recently released from set visits. Because we’ve switched now from mere speculation to including concrete details on the upcoming film, I’m labeling videos from now on as spoilers. You’ve been warned!

My first guess would be that the symbol might be a calling card for Flamel, but would one would be needed for Dumbledore’s longtime alchemy partner? I'm thinking it's for somebody else. Someone who Dumbledore may not be as close with. I've been researching that symbol intensely the last few days, and finally found a couple of matches among what seem to be millions of alchemy symbols. The first one calls it aqua regia, or royal water. But there’s another even stronger candidate, though the two are related. This symbol was used to represent regulus of antimony, in particular star regulus of antimony. If combined with the proper elements and repeated heatings, regulus of antimony forms a metallic star. And both aqua regia and star regulus of antimony are used in alchemy to make potable gold – gold dissolved in an acidic liquid to release its inner spirit. Some alchemists, including the American we discussed in the last video in relation to Jacob, Eirenaeus Philalethes, as well as Nicolas Flamel and Isaac Newton, considered potable gold to be the elixir of life. It was the Philosopher’s Stone. So, to simplify, that symbol Newt holds is about dissolving gold and unleashing the nobler spirit of metal to make the Philosopher’s Stone.
