This video reports on the first digital air-ground communication experiment in 1991 transmitting Air Traffic Control clearances. The experiment was a cooperation between Eurocontrol and several UK research establishments. Although the focus of the video is on the use of the Mode S communication channel, the key messages for today’s ATC are the capabilities of the CINTIA Trajectory Management system to support an automatic conflict detection and resolution system based on Eurontrol’s ZOC concept. In this demonstration, with live aircraft, CINTIA manages conflicts on approach and runway whilst optimizing efficient aircraft operations and airport capacity. The experiment in 1991 demonstrates the feasibility of the concept and the compatibility of CINTIA with digital air-ground datalink operation.
