The ear has 3 parts, the outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear. The inner ear has 2 functions, one is the cochlear which is responsible for hearing and this is in turn connected to 3 structures called semicircular canals, which are 3 pairs, and they are the organs of balance and they are connected to the brain through vestibular nerves, which will help the person sense the imbalance. Maintenance of balance involves multiple inputs or stimulus which the brain gets from various different organs like the eyes, ears, the sensory systems, the sensory fibers, the spinal cord and the brain. You can have imbalance for as trivial a cause as dehydration, that is when you lose fluids from your body, heat strokes, to as a complex a problem as a brain tumor. Here are many reasons to feel light headed, from if you have eaten excess, or you are starving, not eaten for a day, if you are a diabetic and your sugar goes up or low, if your BP goes up or low, if you are taking medicines and also ear conditions can cause giddiness.
