JOLIE AND PITT TOUR HAITI

Hollywood stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, visited a school and a detention centre in Pot au Prince, Haiti, on Friday (13JAN06).

The trip was initiated by the charity founded by Haitian-born hip-hop musician Wyclef Jean: Yele Haiti.

The Yele Haiti charity supports the promotion of rap music as a form of expression, as well as a number of progressive programmes such as scholarships, cleaning streets, food distribution and sports.

Angelina Jolie is well known for her work as goodwill ambassador for the United Nations.

Pitt and Jolie joined Wyclef Jean to visit a school where some students have received scholarships from Yele Haiti.

The couple watched children dance and recite poetry and met with workers from a street-cleaning program backed by the organisation and other groups.

They then headed to a juvenile detention centre where the charity plans to begin a tutoring program for the inmates.

They then went to a one-year anniversary party for Yele Haiti, held at a local television stationed owned by Wyclef Jean.

Pitt and Jolie recently announced that they are expecting their first child later this year.

Jolie, visibly pregnant said "Given just a little chance and given a little help that this is going to be an amazing country as it should be and as it once was."

Wyclef Jean said that hope and dreams were often more important than giving money and expressed his gratitude to Jolie and Pitt for their visit.

"Sometimes you think people need money. No that's not what they need. They need inspiration and they need a dream." he said.

Haiti is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere and has experienced a recent upturn in gang and political-related violence in the last few weeks.

A presidential election is scheduled to take place on the 7th of February.
