On Wednesday, as analysts predicted, the situation in the currency market has significantly changed. In response to strong economic data from the US released overnight, the greenback jumped up against its major counterparts and continues to put downward pressure on them.
The US dollar index rebounded from an intraday low of 101.00, and now is trading at 101.95. Currency strategists forecast further growth of the US currency, despite the absence of major macroeconomic indicators today amid the national holiday in the US.
There is another reason behind a rapid rally of the US dollar, minutes of the Fed’s policy meeting in November. The minutes showed strength in key sectors of the US economy. Fed officials believe a rate increase could become appropriate “relatively soon” to prevent the economy from overheating. This underpinned speculations that monetary policy is to be tightened in December.
Meanwhile, the US dollar largely maintained gains against other major currencies. The safe haven Japanese yen gave in to the solid US dollar.
The dollar/yen pair is trading today at 113.47. Currency strategists think the dollar’s upward trend is likely to continue, so the greenback could grow to 114.00 against the yen in the late session.
Nowadays, hardly any currency can show resilience to the strong US dollar. Market sentiment is shaped by two pending crucial events. The OPEC summit with Russia’s participation aims for a final agreement on oil production cut. The US Fed is holding a policy meeting in December that is broadly expected to end with the long-awaited decision on the rate increase. So the greater likelihood of positive changes triggered broad dollar buying recently.
