The Science Behind the PETM: What Can We Learn from Earth's Most Recent Global Warming Event?

In this video, we discuss the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum - an event about 56 million years ago, during which the Earth drastically transformed due to an increase in mean temperatures. Over the span of 100-200 thousand years, the new climate affected the fauna and flora, causing organisms to migrate, change their size, or even go extinct. Since the PETM was first recognized, scientists have come up with various hypotheses as to what caused it - from a singular event, such as a massive release of methane, to a combination of multiple factors in the natural carbon cycle. Interestingly, this change in climate can be to some degree compared to the current global warming - can we learn anything from our planet's history to help the future?
