This lecture introduced the English metaphysical poet George Herbert, whose work, while influenced by John Donne, is far more self-consciously devotional in nature.

The poems he wrote under the name 'The Temple' were published posthumously, and became wildly popular. They remain some of the most beloved Christian lyrical poems in the English language.
