Winter in Ottawa offers much more than cold weather and snow. In this video, I take you on a detailed winter journey through Ottawa, the capital of Canada, and show you what makes the city a great destination during the colder months.
From historic neighborhoods like ByWard Market to the modern streets of Downtown Ottawa, this video explores how the city adapts to winter and turns it into a unique travel experience. You’ll see how Ottawa balances outdoor winter activities with world-class indoor attractions, making it possible to enjoy the city even on the coldest days.
One of the highlights of winter in Ottawa is the Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that transforms into the world’s largest outdoor skating rink once it freezes, usually in early January. I also share winter views along the Rideau River, followed by a short walk across Alexandra Bridge, connecting Ottawa to Gatineau, Quebec, where you can feel the cultural shift between Ontario and Quebec in just a few minutes.
A major part of this winter guide focuses on Parliament Hill and its completely free Parliament tours, including the Senate, the House of Commons, and Parliament: The Immersive Experience. I explain how the tours work, how long they take, the importance of online reservations, and why arriving early for security checks is essential.
Ottawa is also one of the best cities in Canada for museums, especially in winter. In this video, I take a deep dive into:
Canadian Museum of Nature – wildlife, fossils, Arctic ecosystems, and geology.
Canadian War Museum – Canada’s military history and the human impact of war.
Canadian Museum of History – Indigenous cultures, Canadian identity, and social history.
For a unique bonus experience, I visit Diefenbunker: Canada’s Cold War Museum, a massive underground bunker built during the Cold War, located about 30 minutes from Ottawa. It’s one of the most atmospheric and unforgettable museums in the region.
I also cover seasonal highlights like the Ottawa Christmas Market and Lansdowne Park Skating Rink, perfect for enjoying winter evenings with festive lights, outdoor skating, and local winter vibes.
If you’re planning a winter trip to Canada or wondering where to go in Canada during winter, this video offers a complete and practical guide to Ottawa — combining history, culture, museums, ice skating, and winter city life.
