Pujya Swami Ganhanadaji has shared three profound and practical formulas for spiritual seekers. When followed sincerely and consistently, these principles ensure steady spiritual progress.
He begins his discourse with a beautiful prayer by Swami Sivananda:
Start the day with God,
End the day with God,
Fill the day with God,
This is the way to God.
Three Formulas for Spiritual Success
1) Mess + Mess = No Mess
The first mess refers to the confusions and contradictions of daily life (vyavaharik mess). To clear this, we must apply the second MESS:
• M - Meditation: Includes japa (sajātīya vṛtti pravāha), fostering a steady flow of uplifting thoughts.
• E - Exercise: Control over food, activities, rest, and sleep brings discipline.
• S - Study of Scriptures helps in changing the thoughts. Therefore, Study Classes are considered as the heart of Chinmaya Mission.
• S - Seva (Selfless Service): Human by nature are selfish and lazy; seva (Karma Yoga) is the remedy.
By applying this second MESS, we free ourselves from the first, leading to No Mess in life.
2) Open the Door to Success with OPEN
• N - No and Now!
o Learn to say "No"— Your No is firm, when your Yes is clear.
o Stop postponing spiritual practices due to laziness; act Now for true happiness.
• E - Energy Management: Preserve energy by avoiding:
o Regrets of the past
o Worries about the future
o Excitement of the present
• P - Positive Emotions: Let life’s experiences shape you for the better, not make you bitter.
• O - Observation: Create a space between your thoughts and your true self. In this space lies freedom. Thoughts are in me but I am not in them. Self-observation is superior to mere thought substitution, though when necessary, substitution helps.
3) Put the Mind through the PUT Process
• P - Purification of Mind (Karma Yoga):
Transform vishaya into padārthas through:
o Yajna (sacrifice), Dāna (charity), Tapas (austerity), Japa (chanting), Vrata (vows), and Tīrtha (pilgrimage).
• U - Unification of Mind (Bhakti Yoga):
Cultivate devotion and surrender to unify thoughts with the Divine.
• T - Transcendence of Mind (Jnana Yoga):
