"Sainokami" is known nationwide as左義長（ Sagicho）for a long time , originally it was a court event held during the Heian period in which three ball sticks were tied together, and its name comes from "三毬杖（Sagicho）," meaning three ball sticks, and it seems to have spread throughout the country.
The name has been changed to Saino kami , Dondo Yaki , Kunadono kami in each region, some regions use Sagicho as it is still now.

Niigata's "Sai no Kami" is a traditional and Sacred fire festival held during the New Year, where people bring New Year's decorations and calligraphy and Omamori , Kamidara used last year to burn,
Praying for household safety, prosperity in business, and bountiful harvests.
People roast rice cakes and dried squid to pray for good health.
The burning flames are believed to ward off evil spirits, and the higher the flame, the better comes .

Event Overview
Time: Primarily during the Little New Year (mid-January).
We can know the date about a half a year before.

Content: A cone-shaped "Sainokami" made from kadomatsu (New Year's pine decorations), shimenawa (sacred rope), calligraphy, and amulets is lit on fire,
and the fire flames are used to roast and eat rice cakes and dried squid.

Purpose: Pray for household safety, prosperity in business, bountiful harvests, good health, and protection from evil.
